There is little question that Völuspá – if we can talk of a single Völuspá – lived in the oral tradition before it came to be recorded. It is also highly questionable whether it was composed pen in hand. This means that the composer(s) did not see it in terms of ink symbols on parchment but rather as something that took the form of sound and vision as it was presented live in a space for other people by a performer. The performer would have had expectations about the kind of space in which it would have been performed, and the nature (and fore-knowledge) of the audience that was likely to receive it. In this lecture, the poem will be considered first and foremost from this performance viewpoint, bearing in mind the musical elements that lie within it, and what its form and content suggests about the probable nature of its performance and intended audience.
