This paper explores a change in stereotypical images of immigrant Others and their linguistic practices in the Swedish media landscape as well as in mundane class room talk. Contemporary urban vernaculars, closely associated with Swedish multilingual urban settings, have been represented in the Swedish media over the last thirty years as a “bad” and “deviant” linguistic variety spoken by “non-Swedish” young men. Departing from these racist representations, I shall in an ongoing project – together with Tommaso Milani and Anna Franzén - investigate how a new clownesque figure has emerged when portraying young immigrant men’s linguistic practices in public discourse. Drawing upon critical work on humour (Billig, 2005) and stylizations (Coupland 2007), we show the ambivalent life of comic stylized utterances in a selection of TV-, and Youtube skits. We thereby demonstrate how a previously threatening persona who spoke an allegedly incomprehensible language is now also employed in entertaining contexts in ways that may challenge as well as reproduce stereotypes and language ideologies surrounding the young immigrant Other.
