Dissertation project

Using the methodology of CA I study data from two institutional contexts: undergraduate seminars at a Swedish university and performance appraisal interviews collected in a medium-sized Swedish organization in the financial sector. The specific scope of my attention is how the participants accomplish and manage social positioning.

In the first study (2008) I explored how students create sub-groups within the larger group. Through close analysis of how the interaction unfolds I demonstrate how activities within these sequences can constitute resources for constructing an identity as a 'good student'.

The second paper (2010) examines how the participants interactionally display different perspectives. The 'student's perspective' vs the 'teacher's perspective' are described through close analysis of different excerpts.

In the third paper I analyze how the verb känna - which translates as 'feel' - serves as an interactional device that allows the speaker to create an interactional space in which accountability and responsibility can be negotiated. Manuscript submitted.

In the fourth and ongoing study a specific question/answer-sequence is examined in six performance appraisal interviews. Erica Sandlund and I are interested in how questions from the interview guide are implemented in interaction, and what trajectory one specific question can take in different interviews.
